माँ
मैं नहीं जानता कि मैंने कब इस जीवन की दहलीज पर पहला कदम रखा| वह कौन सी शक्ति थी जिसने मुझे इस विशाल रहस्यमय संसार में जन्म दिया जैसेकि आधी-रात को जंगल में एक बीज अंकुरित होता है? जब मैंने सुबह आखें खोली और रोशनी की तरफ देखा तो मैं एक पल में ही समझ गया कि मैं इस संसार में कोई अजनबी नही हूँ, और एक रहस्यमय शक्ति नें, जिसका न तो कोई नाम था और न ही कोई आकार मुझे अपनी माँ के रूप में अपने आगोश में भर लिया|

I was not aware of the moment when I first crossed the threshold of this life. What was the power that made me open out into this vast mystery like a bud in the forest at midnight ? When in the morning I looked upon the light, I felt in a moment that I was no stranger in this world, that the inscrutable without name and form had taken me in its arms in the form of my own mother.

मैंने हवा से बचाने के लिए, इसे ढकना चाहा
यही वजह है कि दीपक बुझ गया|
फूल क्यों मुरझा गया?
मैंने प्यार में उत्सुक होकर, इसे अपने दिल से सटा लिया,
और यही वजह है कि फूल मुरझा गया|
नदी क्यों सूख गयी?
मैंने अपने इस्तेमाल के लिए इस पर बाँध बना दिया,
और यही वजह है कि नदी सूख गयी|
वीणा क्यों टूट गयी?
मैंने इससे ऐसा सुर निकालना चाहा,
जो इसकी क्षमता से बाहर था,
और यही वजह है कि वीणा टूट गयी|

Why did the lamp go out ?
I shaded it with my cloak to save it,
from the wind, that is why the lamp
went out.
Why did the flower fade ?
I pressed it to my heart with anxious love,
that is why the flower faded.
Why did the stream dry up ?
I put a dam across it to have it for
my use, that is why the stream dried up.
Why did the harp-string break?
I tried to force a note that was
beyond its power, that is why
the harp-string is broken

गिलहरी और पहाड़
एक बार गिलहरी और पहाड़ में झगडा हो गया;
और पहले ने दूसरे को ‘नन्हीं घमंडी’ कह दिया,
गिलहरी ने जवाब दिया,
“बेशक आप बहुत ही बड़े हैं;
लेकिन बाकी सभी चीजें,
और मौसम को एक साथ मिलाकर ही
एक वर्ष बनता है और एक चक्र पूरा होता है|
और मुझे नहीं लगता कि मेरा छोटा होना मेरे लिए कोई शर्म की बात है|
अगर मैं आपके जितनी विशाल नही हूँ
तो आप भी मेरे जैसे छोटे नहीं हैं,
और फुर्तीले तो बिलकुल भी नही हैं|
और मुझे इस बात से इनकार नहीं है
कि आप मेरे लिए एक बेहतरीन रास्ता बनाते हो;
प्रतिभाएं अलग-अलग हैं, और हम दोनों ही अपनी-अपनी जगह सही हैं|
अगर मेरे लिए अपनी पीठ पर जंगल उठाना नामुमकिन है,
तो फिर एक मूंगफली तोडना आपके भी बस की बात नहीं है|”

The Mountain and the squirrel    
Had a quarrel;    
And the former called the latter "Little Prig."    
Bun replied,    
"You are doubtless very big;           
But all sorts of things and weather    
Must be taken in together,    
To make up a year    
And a sphere.    
And I think it no disgrace    
To occupy my place.    
If I'm not as large as you,    
You are not so small as I,    
And not half so spry.    
I'll not deny you make    
A very pretty squirrel track;    
Talents differ; all is well and wisely put;    
If I cannot carry forests on my back,    
Neither can you crack a NUT."
